Which airport is closest to Lech am Arlberg? St. Gallen–Altenrhein Airport (ACH) is the nearest, about 100 km away. Innsbruck Airport (INN), about 123 km away, is the closest major airport – and the cheapest transfer to Lech. Friedrichshafen, Memmingen, Zurich and Munich are further options.
Lech is one of the most exclusive ski resorts in the Alps, but the village has no airport – and no railway station either. The best airport for your ski holiday depends on flight availability, total journey time, transfer costs and where you are travelling from. Compare the airports below and plan your journey to Lech, Zug or Oberlech. The last part of every journey climbs the Flexen Pass, the only road into Lech in winter.

Which Airport Is Closest to Lech am Arlberg?
St. Gallen–Altenrhein Airport (ACH), on the Swiss shore of Lake Constance, is the closest airport to Lech am Arlberg – about 100 km, or roughly 1 hour 20 minutes by road. It is a small regional airport with only a few routes. The closest larger airport is Innsbruck (INN), about 123 km or 1 hour 40 minutes away, with no border crossing – and the cheapest transfer to Lech, from €280 per vehicle.
The closest airport is not always the best airport. A direct flight to Zurich may be more convenient than a connecting flight to Innsbruck, even though the road transfer is longer.
Where to Fly to Go to Lech?
The best airport for Lech depends on where you fly from:
- Shortest road distance: St. Gallen–Altenrhein, if a suitable flight is available – 1 h 20 min.
- Short transfer and lowest fare: Innsbruck, with many seasonal flights – 1 h 40 min.
- Regional German airports: Friedrichshafen and Memmingen, often with budget airlines – 1 h 40 min to 2 h.
- Most flight connections: Zurich, including long-haul and many daily flights from the UK – 2 h 15 min.
- Major international hub: Munich, for long-haul travellers – 3 h 30 min.
In our experience, most of our Lech guests fly into Zurich or Innsbruck: Zurich for the choice of flights, Innsbruck for the short drive. For families and groups, compare the total price of flights and onward transport – an inexpensive flight is not necessarily the cheapest overall journey.
The 6 Airports Closest to Lech am Arlberg
1. St. Gallen–Altenrhein Airport (ACH) – 100 km, Closest by Road
St. Gallen–Altenrhein is the nearest airport to Lech, about 100 km away – around 1 hour 20 minutes from Lake Constance to the slopes. The airport is small, with a short walk from the plane to the exit, but it has fewer flights than Zurich, Munich or Innsbruck. A private transfer takes you through the Rhine valley and the Klostertal, then via Stuben and Zürs over the Flexen Pass, from €320 per vehicle.
Best for: travellers with a suitable Altenrhein flight who want a short road journey.
2. Innsbruck Airport (INN) – 123 km, Closest Major Airport
Innsbruck Airport is the closest larger airport to Lech, about 123 km away. The drive takes about 1 hour 40 minutes – west through the Inn valley, over the Arlberg Pass and the Flexen Pass, longer in heavy snow or weekend ski traffic. With many seasonal flights and the lowest fare to Lech, from €280 per vehicle, it is a popular choice for skiers.
Best for: skiers and families who want a short transfer from a major Austrian airport.
3. Friedrichshafen Airport (FDH) – 130 km
Friedrichshafen Airport, on the northern shore of Lake Constance in Germany, is about 130 km from Lech. The drive takes about 1 hour 40 minutes, via the Austrian border, the Rhine valley, the Klostertal and the Flexen Pass. A private transfer from Friedrichshafen to Lech costs from €400 per vehicle.
Best for: travellers with convenient regional flights to Friedrichshafen.
4. Memmingen Airport (FMM) – 175 km
Memmingen Airport, also known as Munich West Airport, is popular with budget airlines. It is about 175 km from Lech, about 2 hours by road. When you compare it with Innsbruck or Zurich, add the transfer cost and extra luggage fees to the airfare. A private transfer costs from €440 per vehicle.
Best for: travellers comparing budget flights and the total cost of reaching Lech.
5. Zurich Airport (ZRH) – 200 km
Zurich Airport has the widest choice of flights near Lech am Arlberg and is about 200 km away. We drive via St. Gallen, the Rhine valley and Langen and then over the Flexen Pass – not via St. Anton – in about 2 hours 15 minutes. A private transfer costs from €460 per vehicle, the same as to St. Anton.
Best for: international visitors, families and groups who want the best flight connections.
6. Munich Airport (MUC) – 260–310 km
Munich Airport is about 310 km from Lech via Lindau, or about 260 km via the Fernpass, and the journey takes about 3 hours 30 minutes. It can be attractive when its flights are more convenient or less expensive. A private transfer costs from €720 per vehicle.
Best for: international travellers whose flight options favour Munich.
Innsbruck vs Zurich vs Munich – Which Is Best for Lech?
Choosing between the three major airports is often more important than simply picking the nearest one.
Choose Innsbruck for the shortest transfer
About 1 hour 40 minutes to Lech and the lowest fare, from €280 per vehicle. A practical option whenever you find a suitable flight, particularly in the winter season.
Choose Zurich if flight connections matter most
About 2 hours 15 minutes to Lech, from €460 per vehicle. Zurich has a wide choice of international flights – a direct flight to Zurich can save more time than a connection to Innsbruck.
Choose Munich if it offers a better itinerary
About 3 hours 30 minutes to Lech, from €720 per vehicle. Munich is further away, but worth it when its timetable or ticket price suits you better. Allow extra time on busy ski weekends.
Our advice: compare the whole journey from your departure airport to your hotel in Lech – not just the flight time or the transfer distance.
How Can I Get to Lech am Arlberg?
Lech has no railway station, so every journey ends on the road over the Flexen Pass. There are four ways to get there.
Private Airport Transfer
The quickest and most comfortable option. Your driver tracks your flight, meets you in arrivals and drives you directly to your hotel, chalet or apartment in Lech, Zug or Oberlech – no changes, no bus from the station, skis and luggage included. The price is per car, so for families and groups it is often cheaper than several tickets.
By Train and Bus
Take the train to Langen am Arlberg or St. Anton – some trains stop only at St. Anton – and then a bus or taxi up over the Flexen Pass to Lech. This suits solo travellers with light luggage; connections depend on your flight and the train timetable. Coming by train? We pick you up at the station and drive you straight to your hotel in Lech.
By Shuttle Bus
In winter, the Arlberg Express shared shuttle runs from Zurich Airport to the Arlberg villages, including Lech, for around €65 per person. It follows a fixed timetable, stops in several villages on the way and takes about 3 to 3½ hours – check the operator’s website for current departures and fares.
By Car
A rental car means driving the Arlberg and the Flexen Pass in winter yourself – snowy or icy roads, snow chains at the roadside and, for UK and Irish drivers, driving on the right. Austrian motorways and expressways require a toll sticker (vignette), and parking in Lech is scarce and expensive after heavy snowfall. For a ski week the car mostly stays parked – many guests book a transfer instead.
How Can I Travel from Zurich Airport to Lech am Arlberg?
Zurich Airport is about 200 km from Lech. You have three options:
- Private transfer – direct to your hotel in about 2 hours 15 minutes, from €460 per vehicle for up to 8 people. Zurich Airport to Lech transfer
- Train and bus – the railway station is right at the airport. Most connections need one or more changes, for example in Zürich HB, Buchs SG, St. Margrethen, Feldkirch or Bludenz, and the train journey can take up to around 3½ hours, for roughly CHF 61–110 per person, plus the bus from Langen or St. Anton up to Lech.
- Arlberg Express shuttle – around €65 per person, about 3 to 3½ hours, in winter only.
How Do I Get from Innsbruck Airport to Lech without a Taxi?
By bus, train and bus again, with two changes: bus F to Innsbruck main station (every 15 minutes, about 20 minutes, around €3), the train to Langen am Arlberg (about 1 h 30 min, around €29) or St. Anton (about 1 h 15 min, around €24), then a bus up to Lech – around €27–32 per person plus the local bus. A private transfer takes about 1 hour 40 minutes, from €280 per vehicle. Innsbruck Airport to Lech transfer
Getting to Lech in Winter – the Flexen Pass
From the west – Zurich, Altenrhein, Friedrichshafen, Memmingen and Munich via Lindau – the road to Lech runs via Langen am Arlberg, Stuben, the Flexen Pass and Zürs. From Innsbruck it crosses the Arlberg Pass first and then the Flexen Pass.
Important: the road between Lech and Warth is closed in winter. Some navigation systems still suggest it – in winter the only road into Lech is over the Flexen Pass. Heavy snowfall and busy Saturday changeover traffic can make the drive longer, so allow extra time, especially for your return flight. Our local drivers know these roads and choose the open route on the day.
What if the Flexen Pass is closed?
It happens rarely – only on days with very high avalanche danger, sometimes for a few hours, sometimes until the next morning. In winter the Flexen Pass is the only road into Lech, so we watch the road status and call you before you land. Hotels in Lech usually find their guests a room for the night elsewhere on the Arlberg; we drive you there and agree the onward journey with you as soon as the road reopens.
Airport Transfers to Lech, Zug, Oberlech and Zürs
Lech has several areas where guests stay, and the drop-off point matters when you book:
- Lech village – we drive you to the door of your hotel, chalet or apartment.
- Zug – give us the full address of your hotel or chalet when you book.
- Oberlech – most Oberlech guests go up with the Oberlechbahn cable car: we drop you at the valley station in Lech, and on busy days, such as Saturdays, we use the drop-off level beneath it in the Anger Garage. Your luggage goes onto a trolley and travels up with the cable car.
- Zürs – staying in Zürs rather than Lech? See our airport transfers to Zürs – Zürs is on the way, over the Flexen Pass.
Not sure where the car can stop? Ask your hotel’s reception – we take you wherever they recommend.
