Which airport is closest to Zürs am Arlberg? St. Gallen–Altenrhein Airport (ACH) is the nearest, about 95 km away – roughly 1 hour 10 minutes by road. Innsbruck Airport (INN), about 118 km away, is the closest major airport and the cheapest transfer to Zürs. Friedrichshafen, Memmingen, Zurich and Munich are further options.

Zürs am Arlberg is a small, high-altitude ski resort at about 1,700 m, between Stuben and Lech, directly linked to the Ski Arlberg area and known for its ski-in/ski-out hotels. The village has no airport and no railway station, and it is reached only over the Flexen Pass road. The best airport for your ski holiday in Zurs depends on flight availability, total journey time, transfer costs and where you are travelling from.

Airports near Zürs am Arlberg – Distance, Travel Time & Prices

Distances and travel times are by road from the airport to Zürs am Arlberg; in snow and on busy winter weekends the drive takes longer. Prices are for a private transfer, per car – not per person – for up to 8 people.

Which Airport Is Closest to Zürs am Arlberg?

St. Gallen–Altenrhein Airport (ACH), on the Swiss shore of Lake Constance, is the closest airport to Zürs am Arlberg – about 95 km, or roughly 1 hour 10 minutes by road. It is a small regional airport with only a few routes. The closest larger airport is Innsbruck (INN), about 118 km or 1 hour 30 minutes away, with no border crossing – and the cheapest transfer to Zürs, from €280 per vehicle.

The closest airport is not always the best airport. A direct flight to Zurich may be more convenient than a connecting flight to Innsbruck, even though the road transfer is longer.

Where to Fly to Go to Zürs?

The best airport for Zürs depends on where you fly from:

  • Shortest road distance: St. Gallen–Altenrhein, if a suitable flight is available – 1 h 10 min.
  • Short transfer and lowest fare: Innsbruck, with many seasonal flights – 1 h 30 min.
  • Regional German airports: Friedrichshafen and Memmingen, often with budget airlines – 1 h 30 min to 1 h 50 min.
  • Most flight connections: Zurich, including long-haul and many daily flights from the UK – 2 h 15 min.
  • Major international hub: Munich, for long-haul travellers – 3 h 20 min.

In our experience, most of our Zürs guests fly into Zurich or Innsbruck: Zurich for the choice of flights, Innsbruck for the short drive. For families and groups, compare the total price of flights and onward transport – an inexpensive flight is not necessarily the cheapest overall journey.

The 6 Airports Closest to Zürs am Arlberg

1. St. Gallen–Altenrhein Airport (ACH) – 95 km, Closest by Road

St. Gallen–Altenrhein is the nearest airport to Zürs, about 95 km away – around 1 hour 10 minutes from Lake Constance to the slopes. The airport is small, with a short walk from the plane to the exit, but it has fewer flights than Zurich, Munich or Innsbruck. We drive via Diepoldsau, the Rhine valley, Feldkirch, Bludenz and Langen, then through Stuben and over the Flexen Pass to Zürs, from €320 per vehicle.

Best for: travellers with a suitable Altenrhein flight who want a short road journey.

2. Innsbruck Airport (INN) – 118 km, Closest Major Airport

Innsbruck Airport is the closest larger airport to Zürs, about 118 km away. The drive takes about 1 hour 30 minutes – west through the Inn valley and the Stanzertal past St. Anton and St. Christoph, over the Arlberg Pass and up to the Flexen Pass, longer in heavy snow or weekend ski traffic. With many seasonal flights and the lowest fare to Zürs, from €280 per vehicle, it is a popular choice for skiers.

Best for: skiers, couples and families who can find a convenient flight to Innsbruck.

3. Friedrichshafen Airport (FDH) – 125 km

Friedrichshafen Airport, on the northern shore of Lake Constance in Germany, is about 125 km from Zürs. The drive takes about 1 hour 30 minutes, via Lindau, Bregenz, the Rhine valley, Bludenz and Langen, then through Stuben over the Flexen Pass. A private transfer from Friedrichshafen to Zürs costs from €400 per vehicle.

Best for: travellers whose flight schedules favour Friedrichshafen.

4. Memmingen Airport (FMM) – 170 km

Memmingen Airport, also known as Munich West Airport, is popular with budget airlines. It is about 170 km from Zürs, about 1 hour 50 minutes by road via the A96, Lindau and the Rhine valley. When you compare it with Innsbruck or Zurich, add the transfer cost and extra luggage fees to the airfare. A private transfer costs from €440 per vehicle.

Best for: budget-conscious travellers comparing the total cost of reaching Zürs.

5. Zurich Airport (ZRH) – 195 km

Zurich Airport has the widest choice of flights near Zürs am Arlberg and is about 195 km away. We drive via St. Gallen, the Rhine valley and Langen and then through Stuben over the Flexen Pass – not via St. Anton – in about 2 hours 15 minutes. A private transfer costs from €460 per vehicle.

Best for: international visitors, families and groups who want the best flight connections.

6. Munich Airport (MUC) – 305 km

Munich Airport is about 305 km from Zürs, via Memmingen, Lindau, Bregenz and the Rhine valley, and the journey takes about 3 hours 20 minutes. It can be attractive when its flights are more convenient or less expensive, especially after a long-haul flight with children or several ski bags. A private transfer costs from €720 per vehicle.

Best for: long-haul visitors whose flight options favour Munich.

Innsbruck vs Zurich vs Munich – Which Is Best for Zürs?

Choosing between the three major airports is often more important than simply picking the nearest one.

Choose Innsbruck for the shortest transfer

About 1 hour 30 minutes to Zürs and the lowest fare, from €280 per vehicle. Especially useful for short ski breaks and families who want to keep the onward journey short.

Choose Zurich if flight connections matter most

About 2 hours 15 minutes to Zürs, from €460 per vehicle. Zurich has a wide choice of international flights – a direct flight to Zurich can save more time than a connection to Innsbruck.

Choose Munich if it offers a better itinerary

About 3 hours 20 minutes to Zürs, from €720 per vehicle. Munich is further away, but worth it when its timetable or ticket price suits you better. Allow extra time on busy ski weekends.

Our advice: compare the whole journey from your departure airport to your hotel in Zürs – not just the flight time or the transfer distance.

How Can I Get to Zürs am Arlberg?

Zürs has no railway station, so every journey ends on the road over the Flexen Pass. There are four ways to get there.

Private Airport Transfer

The quickest and most comfortable option. Your driver tracks your flight, meets you in arrivals and drives you directly to the door of your hotel, chalet or apartment in Zürs – no changes, no bus from the station, skis and luggage included. The price is per car, so for families and groups it is often cheaper than several tickets.

By Train and Bus

Take the train to Langen am Arlberg or St. Anton – some trains stop only at St. Anton – and then a bus or taxi up over the Flexen Pass to Zürs. This suits solo travellers with light luggage; connections depend on your flight and the train timetable. Coming by train? We pick you up at the station and drive you straight to your hotel in Zürs.

By Shuttle Bus

In winter, the Arlberg Express shared shuttle runs from Zurich Airport to the Arlberg villages, for around €65 per person. It follows a fixed timetable, stops in several villages on the way and takes about 3 to 3½ hours – check the operator’s website for current departures and fares.

By Car

A rental car means driving the Arlberg and the Flexen Pass in winter yourself – snowy or icy roads, snow chains at the roadside and, for UK and Irish drivers, driving on the right. Austrian motorways and expressways require a toll sticker (vignette). For a ski week in Zürs, with ski-in/ski-out hotels, the car mostly stays parked – many guests book a transfer instead.

How Can I Travel from Zurich Airport to Zürs?

Zurich Airport is about 195 km from Zürs. You have three options:

  • Private transfer – direct to your hotel in about 2 hours 15 minutes, from €460 per vehicle for up to 8 people. Zurich Airport to Zürs transfer
  • Train and bus – the railway station is right at the airport. Most connections need one or more changes, for example in Zürich HB, Buchs SG, St. Margrethen, Feldkirch or Bludenz, and the train journey can take up to around 3½ hours, for roughly CHF 61–110 per person, plus the bus from Langen or St. Anton up to Zürs.
  • Arlberg Express shuttle – around €65 per person, about 3 to 3½ hours, in winter only.

How Do I Get from Innsbruck Airport to Zürs without a Taxi?

By bus, train and bus again, with two changes: bus F to Innsbruck main station (every 15 minutes, about 20 minutes, around €3), the train to Langen am Arlberg (about 1 h 30 min, around €29) or St. Anton (about 1 h 15 min, around €24), then a bus up to Zürs – around €27–32 per person plus the local bus. A private transfer takes about 1 hour 30 minutes, from €280 per vehicle. Innsbruck Airport to Zürs transfer

Getting to Zürs in Winter – the Flexen Pass

Zürs lies directly on the Flexen Pass road between Stuben and Lech, at about 1,700 m.

Arriving from Zurich, Altenrhein, Friedrichshafen, Memmingen or Munich

The road enters Austria from the west and follows the Rhine valley and the Klostertal to Langen am Arlberg. From there it climbs through Stuben and over the Flexen Pass to Zürs – you reach Zürs before Lech, and you do not drive through St. Anton.

Arriving from Innsbruck

From Innsbruck the road follows the Inn valley and the Stanzertal to St. Anton, continues past St. Christoph over the Arlberg Pass and joins the Flexen Pass road just before Zürs.

Important: the road between Lech and Warth is closed in winter. Some navigation systems still suggest it – in winter the way to Zürs is over the Flexen Pass. Heavy snowfall and busy Saturday changeover traffic can make the drive longer, so allow extra time, especially for your return flight. Our local drivers know these roads and choose the open route on the day.

What if the Flexen Pass is closed?

Rarely – only on days with very high avalanche danger, sometimes for a few hours, sometimes until the next morning. There is no other road into Zürs, so we watch the road status and call you before you land. Hotels in Zürs usually find their guests a room for the night elsewhere on the Arlberg; we drive you there and agree the onward journey with you as soon as the road reopens.
